Coaches Report
(Bill Voigt): On October 1st the
SCS Planning committee met with the attendees of the SCS Coaches Clinic. Topics
of discussion were SCS All-Star Teams and Age Group incentives; the format for
championship meets, specifically Summer JOs; and the SCS competition calendar
for 2019-2024.
ALL-STARS: The
general sentiment was that SCS should increase support for the age group
all-star meets currently on our calendar: Pacific All-Stars, NACC, the
Festival, as well as Western Zones. Most felt that SCS should increase support for
Western Zones, defraying some of the cost to swimmers attending. NACC, while is
some jeopardy in the short term due to lack of LSCs who can currently
participate, should continue, as many LSCs would like to participate if they
can find the funding. There was strong support that NACC be selected from a
single qualifying meet, preferably summer JOs ... if that could be worked out
logistically. There was a further proposal that a 14-under team be selected
from Spring JOs for either a spring all-star meet or an all-star camp to be
held at the OTC in the spring.
CHAMPIONSHIP
STRUCTURE: I submitted a proposal to reformat Summer JOs as a 5-day meet with 1
relay event each night in finals, eliminating relay day. I am happy to share
this proposal with anyone interested. There was extensive discussion, with
several straw votes on issues the proposal presents. Eliminating relay day was
favored by a majority, the room evenly split on a 5-day or a 4-day format, and
there was general support for continuing to have several summer JO meets.
THE CALENDAR: There
is continuing support for the Winter Age Group Championship is December. There
was a proposal that there be an SCS-mandated Age Group Race Series, similar to
the Senior Race series, but not to replace the BRW meets. I pointed out the
difficulties in such a series, having considered it for the Orange committee. It
was proposed to move Kevin Perry to be 3 weeks out from Junior Nationals and 4
weeks out from Nationals. This would put it Nov. 9-11 in 2019 (Monday, Nov. 11
is Veterans Day. It was also proposed that there be Senior championship
formatted meets on MLK weekend and Presidents Day weekend, which would be a
selection meet for an all-star meet vs. Canada. There was a suggestion that the
various committees host a meet of this type on MLK weekend, with the top 4
swimmers in each event advancing to the championship meet in February. It was
proposed that SCS host a pre-senior meet in February for high school students
before the start of CIF season (15-over only, Senior
Development
cap).
The bridging of
age group to senior competition was discussed. There was a proposal that there
be one event each year that is an age group + senior meet (similar to the old Q
Meet), perhaps an all-star meet by committee.
The dates of
the ASCA clinic in Anaheim will be September 4-9, 2018 (there may be a discount
for SCS coaches attending). The USA Swimming "Swimposium" will take
the place of the SCS clinic in 2018, October 6-7.
