Mission Viejo Nadadores Junior Olympic (JO) Championship

Guidance for the Coronavirus (COVID-19)

We’re excited that you are participating in the 2020 Southern California 14 & Under Short Course JO Championship. A great deal of work has been put into planning a world-class event, and now it’s your turn to help us execute.

Our first priority is the safety of our swimmers, coaches, volunteers, and spectators. The Center for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) states that the risk to the general public of COVID-19 is low, but with your help, we can minimize the risk to all JO participants.

According to the CDC, actions to help prevent the spread of COVID-19 include:

1.  Stay home when you are sick.

2.  Avoid touching your eyes, nose, and mouth.

3.  Cover your cough or sneeze with a tissue, then throw the tissue in the trash.

4.  Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surfaces using a regular household cleaning spray or wipe.

5.  The CDC does not recommend that people who are well wear a facemask to protect themselves from respiratory diseases, including COVID-19.

6.  Facemasks should be used by people who show symptoms, but at that point, just please stay home!

7.  Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds, especially after going to the bathroom; before eating; and after blowing your nose, coughing, or sneezing.

8.  If soap and water are not readily available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer with at least 60% alcohol.

9.  Always wash hands with soap and water if hands are visibly dirty.

Additional action taken by the City of Mission Viejo and the Nadadores include:

1.     Additional hand washing stations have been distributed to high-traffic areas around the Marguerite Aquatics Center (MAC).

2.     Touch points in MAC have been evaluated and reduced where possible. For example, access to the bathrooms and the pool deck will be unrestricted so you do not need to touch door handles.

3.     Additional speakers have been activated around the MAC for announcements and meet progress so participants can refrain from congregating around the score board.

4.     Marshals will be reminding participants to refrain from touching items in high traffic areas such as heat sheets.

5.     General guidance will be discussed and reviewed with the coaches in a meeting prior to the event.

6.     Swimmers will be encouraged to leave some space between their personal items (parka, towel, swim bag) and those of other swimmers.

7.     Signage will be displayed to remind participants of their responsibility in helping promote a safe event.

8.     Snack bar personnel will change their gloves after touching common surfaces.

9.     MAC staff will be monitoring pool water conditions early and often. According to the CDC, there is no evidence that COVID-19 can be spread to humans through the use of pools. Proper operation, maintenance, and disinfection (e.g., with chlorine and bromine) of pools should remove or inactivate the virus that causes COVID-19.

10.   Announcers will be reminding participants about personal space and to refrain from shaking hands during the event.

11.   Live streaming of the event will be made available for those who wish to enjoy JOs from at home. In addition, Meet Mobile will be constantly updated with meet results.

Thanks for helping our Athletes safely display their months of hard work and effort at the 2020 MVN JOs!
